Coast Guard seizes trawler, buries illegally netted stingray fish

  • 2,000kgs of Shaplapata (stingray) seized 
  • Tk50 lakh worth of banned fish recovered

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard have recovered Tk50 lakh worth of banned fish from a trawler in the south zone at Nizampur in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali.

They conducted the raid under the leadership of BCG Nizampur station’s Contingent Commander Abu Rashed Sumon in the area adjacent to Janani Ice Factory Ghat on the Shibbaria River early Friday.

They intercepted the trawler, MV Ma Janani-5, and seized 2,000kgs of Shaplapata (stingray), 40kgs of shark fries, and 300kgs of Pitambari fish from the fishermen.

Later, the seized fish was buried in the presence of Kalapara Upazila Fisheries Officer Mohsin Reza and Mohipur Range Officer Abul Kalam Azad.

The Coast Guard team released the trawler on the bond that they would never catch any more stingray fish.

Contingent Commander Abu Rashed Sumon said netting and selling of these kinds of fish fries is prohibited under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
