A cargo ship named "MV Mou Moni" capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Hatiya, Noakhali district, on Thursday, leaving one sailor missing while 11 others have been rescued.
According to reports from the coast guard, the vessel encountered strong waves causing its bottom to break, leading to its sinking.
The ship's master was reported to have jumped into the river wearing a life jacket but was swept away by the current and remains missing.
The remaining 11 sailors managed to stay afloat by clinging to the top of the ship until rescue.
Fishermen aboard a fishing trawler spotted the sailors floating with the ship and successfully rescued them. The rescued sailors were then transferred to another vessel en route to Chittagong.
Following the accident, seafarers promptly contacted the national emergency service at 999 for assistance.
Hatia Naval Police and the Coast Guard were alerted and dispatched to the scene for rescue operations.
Teams from the Hatiya Coast Guard and Nalchira Naval Police swiftly responded, confirming the rescue of the sailors after coordinating with the fishermen.
Md Ohidul Islam, the brother of Md Ali Hossain, one of the rescued sailors, expressed relief, mentioning that his brother and ten others were safely rescued by a fishing trawler. However, there is still no information about the missing ship's master.
Communication with the missing sailor has been hindered as his mobile phone got damaged.
