7 KNF members including Ruma Chhatra League president land in jail

A Bandarban court on Tuesday sent seven members of of militant group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) including the president of Ruma upazila Chhatra League unit, to jail in cases filed over the recent bank robberies, arms looting in Sonali Bank of the upazila.

The arrestees are- Chhatra League president Bhan Nun Noam, 33, Lal Nun Noam, 68, Lal David Bom, 42, Chomliyan Bom, 56, Lal Pek Liyan, 32, Lal Min Bom, 50 of Munlaipara and Bhan Biyak Bom, 23 of Laimipara of the upazila.

Judge A S M Emran of the chief judicial magistrate court of Bandarban passed the order.  

They were arrested in a drive conducted by joint forces in Ruma upazila on Monday afternoon.

Later, they were produced before the court with tight security on Tuesday.

Priyon Palit, sub-inspector of Bandarban court police, confirmed the matter.

Meanwhile, the Chhatra League president has been expelled from the organization for his involvement in terrorist and degrading activities that are against the organization's constitution and discipline.

An expulsion order was issued on Monday night signed by Bandarban district unit president Pulu and general secretary Saddam Hossain Manik.

Locals have accused him of spreading information in various armed terrorist forces of the upazila, extortion, and intimidation of common people.

On April 2, the separatist group kidnapped Bandarban’s Ruma upazila branch Sonali Bank manager Md Nezam Uddin and tried to loot Tk1.5 crore from the vault of the branch. But they were unable to take the money.

They also carried out robberies at Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban on the following day.

Later, the Home minister and senior officials of the home ministry, security forces and administration visited the area.

So far, nine cases have been filed with Ruma and Thanchi police stations.
