  • Two of the suspects arrested so far
  • Rival candidate was present during the abduction
Update : 18 Apr 2024, 11:45 PM

Through examination of CCTV footage, at least 10 people have been identified over the abduction and beating up of a chairman candidate in Natore’s Singra Upazila.

Despite the police identifying them with the help of local politicians and journalists, they did not disclose detailed information about the accused.

However, sources confirmed that most of those identified are leaders and activists of the Juba League, Swechchhasebak League and Sramik League.

According to the case filed over the incident, upazila unit Swechchhasebak League General Secretary Mohan Ali and his associates forced Delwar Hossain, the victim, into a microbus while he was returning home after submitting the nomination form online on Monday. Later, they tortured him.

Seriously injured Delwar was shifted to the ICU of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at midnight after his condition became critical.

Among the 10 people are the manager of a business run by Delwar’s rival candidate, Lutful Habib Rubel, and the latter’s chauffeur.

Delwar's brother Mujibur Rahman filed the case at Natore Sadar police station against 20 to 25 unidentified men later on Monday night.

So far, only two people—Suman Ahmed and Nazmul Haq Babu—have been arrested over the incident, said Natore Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman.

“We’ve got CCTV footage that we examined to identify the culprits,” he said, adding that police were trying to arrest the suspects.

The OC declined to divulge any more information about the duo, citing the need for a proper investigation into the case.

How things unfolded

Soon after 4pm on Monday, as the footage shows, a group of men are beating up Delwar indiscriminately inside the district election office of Natore.

While continuing to beat him, they forcibly put Delawar into a black microbus that was several metres away from the government office.

An hour later, he was removed from the vehicle near his village home in the upazila’s Kolom Union Parishad.

Singra Upazila unit Swechchhasebak League General Secretary Mohan Ali was on the ground floor of the district election office during the incident on Monday.

Fingers pointed at Palak’s brother-in-law

The upazila chairman aspirant, Rubel, is joint general secretary of the upazila unit Awami League. He is also chairman of Sherkole Union Parishad.

Additionally he has a rather crucial identity: he is the brother-in-law of State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak.

Before Delwar submitted his nomination form on Monday, Rubel had been the only candidate to do so.

Rubel’s chauffeur, in a black T-shirt, was sitting in the driver’s seat of the microbus in question. He was leaving the spot by driving the vehicle.

More abductions?

On Monday morning, Rubel’s men picked up Delwar’s brother, Emdadul Haq, and his associate, Alauddin Munshi, from the place.

Soon after that, Delwar accused Rubel of kidnapping the duo.

However, Rubel refuted the allegations.

Natore Superintendent of Police Tariqul Islam said that several teams were working to arrest those involved in the incidents.
