Lost their home to storm, lost their lives on way to get relief tins

The family that met a tragic road accident in Faridpur on Tuesday morning, their home was destroyed in the recent nor'wester in Faridpur on March 28. The family has been struggling since then. Finally, there was a ray of hope two weeks after the storm. The family was enlisted to receive government relief to build their home again. But who knew that would be the end of their lives?

Rakib Hossain Milan, 42, and his family were on their way to receive corrugated iron sheets from the relief wing of Faridpur Deputy Commissioner’s office.

He, along with his wife Samima Islam Sumi, 35, sons- Alvi Ruhan,7, and their younger son Abu Sinan, 4 and grandmother Morjina Begum, 70, left their village in Boalmari upazila Tuesday morning in a pickup van.

They almost reached their destination. But their bus collided head-on with a bus on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at Sadar upazila. All of them died with their hope of getting back their normal lives again.

Milan, son of freedom fighter Tara Mia, was a lift operator in the Ministry of Finance at the Secretariat.

Milan’s cousin Ruhul Amin said, the family was on their way to Faridpur in a pickup van to bring relief tins from the relief wing of Faridpur DC office, reoorts UNB. 

Another cousin of Milan, Nuruzzaman Khasru said, Milan’s elder brother Faridul Islam is a school teacher and younger brother runs a shop in the district’s Sadar upazila.

According to Faridpur DC office sources, government relief tins were supposed to be distributed among the disaster affected families, and the affected family members enlisted from Alfadanga and Boalmari upazilas were coming to Faridpur.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Md Kamrul Ahsan Talukder and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Morshed Alam visited the spot.

The DC said that an immediate grant of Tk20,000 has been given by the government for the burial of those who died and a grant of Tk20,000 for those who are under treatment. Besides, a grant of Tk5 lakh will be given to the family of the deceased and Tk3 lakh to the injured family.

Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur Kamrul Ahsan Talukder said that a five-member investigation committee headed by the additional district magistrate has been formed.

Tk5 lakh has been announced for the family members of the deceased and Tk3 lakh for the compensation of the injured, he added.

At least 14 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup truck on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Kanaipur union under Faridpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

The eight other deceased are- pickup driver Nazrul Molla, 35, of Kusumdi village of Alfadanga Municipality, Janahara Begum, 50, of Bejidanga village of Alfadanga Sadar Union, her niece Sonia Begum, 30, Sonia's 11-month-old child Noorani, Tabi Khan, 55, Shukuran Begum, 90, of Hidadanga village, her daughter Monira Begum Surya ,55 and neighbor Kahinur Begum, 60.

According to locals and police sources, a Magura-bound Unique Paribahan bus collided with a Dhaka-bound pickup, leaving 11 people dead on the spot.

Two persons died while being taken to hospital and another died undergoing treatment.
