Armed men reportedly attacked a checkpost in Alikadam upazila of Bandarban in the early hours of Friday.

This follows incidents of robbery, abduction, and a clash between the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) and law enforcement in Ruma and Thanchi upazilas over recent days.

The latest incident reportedly took place in the 26 Mile area of Alikadam at around 12:30am.

According to local accounts, a group of armed men, numbering at least 30 and travelling in two vehicles, tried to run through a checkpoint of security forces on the Thanchi-Alikadam road and exchanged fire with law enforcement personnel posted there, before proceeding towards Alikadam, prompting authorities to bolster security measures in the vicinity.

They were in the Dim Pahar tourist area till 2:30am, as stated by local residents.

Meanwhile, Alikadam police station OC Khandaker Tabidur Rahman told this correspondent over the phone security forces at the checkpost opened fire after seeing a truck approaching them.

Previously, over 100 men and women members of the KNF carried out an attack and opened fire in Thanchi upazila of Bandarban on Thursday night.

Raihan Kazemi, additional superintendent of police, said that the KNF members attacked twice to rob the Sonali Bank branch in Thanchi at around 8:30pm, but the police retaliated and foiled their attempt.

Locals have expressed fear over the recent surge in criminal activities attributed to the KNF in Bandarban over the past three days.
