Electrocution in Moulvibazar: Sixth family member dies

  • Sonia, 12, lost her parents and three siblings early on Tuesday 
  • She died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka later that night

Another injured victim, who had lost five of her family members from electrocution caused by a torn live wire of Palli Bidyut in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Tuesday night.

The deceased was Sonia, 12, daughter of Foyzur Rahman of East Goalbari village in Juri upazila.

Five members of her family – father Foyzur Rahman, 52, a rickshaw-van puller, mother Shiri Begum, 45, sisters Samia Begum, 15, Sabina Begum, 13, and brother Sayem Mia, 8 – died early on Tuesday from electrocution as a live electric wire of the local Palli Bidyut Samity fell on their house that also caused a fire.

Sonia, who received burn injuries, was first taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and later to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Locals also condemned negligence on the part of Palli Bidyut Samity and demanded the electric line be replaced immediately.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe body was formed to look into the deaths.

The committee has to submit its report within three working days.

Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner Urme Binte Salam provided Tk50,000 to the family members of the deceased.
