Gazipur cylinder blast: Death toll rises to 13

  • Two succumbed to their injuries on Tuesday
  • Another 15 people undergoing treatment
  • At least 35 people were injured in the explosion

The death toll from a cylinder blast in Gazipur last week has risen to 13 with two more persons succumbing to their injuries.

The deceased were Yasin Arafat, 21, son of Alamin of Gopak village of Khoksa upazila, Kushtia and Moshiur Rahman, 26, son of Hamidul Haque, hailing from Parulia village in Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat upazila. 

Arafat died at 7:30pm and Moshiur at 9:05pm while undergoing treatment in the ICU of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery.

Resident doctor Md Tariqul Islam confirmed the information and said that Arafat received 62% burn injuries while Moshiur had 60% burn injuries. 

Arafat used to live in the Topstar area of ​​Kaliakair in Gazipur. He was a bus helper of Taqwa Paribahan by profession.

Ayesha Khatun, mother of the deceased Arafat, said that he encountered the blast while returning home through that road on the day of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Moshiur was a garment worker and was returning from his workplace on the day of the explosion incident. 

Another 15 people are currently undergoing treatment. 

At least 35 people were injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a house in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur on March 13.

The incident took place in a shanty town of Shafiqul Islam Shafiq in Kaliakair around 6pm.

One patient was admitted with 100% burns while three were hospitalized with 95% burns, and 16 were hospitalized with over 50% burns, according to sources at the hospital.
