The Chittagong University has sacked Chemistry Department’s Professor Dr Mahbubul Matin following allegations of attempted rape of a student.

The decision was made during the syndicate's 548th emergency meeting held at the university's Fine Arts Institute on Friday night.

In this regard, Assistant Professor of the Bangla Department, Mohammad Ali, said: “Professor Matin has been sacked based on recommendations from the anti-sexual harassment cell, as the allegations have been substantiated.”

The final decision on the criminal case is pending due to a lack of recommendations from the anti-sexual harassment cell’s probe report, he added.

A female student of the university’s Chemistry Department brought an allegation against Professor Matin for sexually harassing her while conducting her thesis.

She filed a written complaint to the university Vice Chancellor Shireen Akhter on January 31.

The letter said that on January 6, Professor Matin sexually assaulted her when she was alone in the university’s laboratory. Later, on January 13, he attempted to rape her in his room.

The student also mentioned that the professor had threatened her and her classmates to prevent them from disclosing the incidents.

Meanwhile, the investigation committee, formed by the anti-sexual harassment cell, submitted a report following a meeting.

Vice Chancellor Shireen Akhter, who is also president of the anti-sexual harassment cell, convened an emergency syndicate meeting on Friday, where the final decision was taken.

Students from the chemistry department had been boycotting classes since January 31, demanding the removal of the professor and urging university authorities to file a case against him.
