A lighter vessel, MV Purbachal-7, carrying 800 tons of coal, has capsized in the Bhairab River in Jessore’s Abhaynagar upazila.
The ship sank with coals worth approximately Tk1.35 crore around 3am on Tuesday, MV Purbachal-7 Master Mofizur Rahman confirmed.
The coal was imported from Indonesia by JHM Group and brought it to Nowapara in Abhaynagar.
According to the importing company, about 800 tons of coal imported from Indonesia were brought to Harbaria of Mongla port by the cargo ship.
From there, the cargo ship MV Purbachal-7 loaded the coal on January 4 morning and anchored at the Bhairab River ghat in Bhatpara area on January 5.
On Monday, the water began to rise in the ship during low tide around midnight and sank around 3am on Tuesday.
Jagadish Chandra Mandal, sales officer of JHM Group, said efforts to recover the coal-laden ship already started.
