Shamim Azad, who was detained for firing outside the Pahartali polling centre in Chittagong-10 on the day of the polls, is accused in at least five cases.

According to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Shamim, a Chhatra League activist, is involved in various criminal activities including extortion, tender bidding, hill cutting, and threatening people.

Khandaker Al Moin, director of RAB's Legal and Media Wing, disclosed this information on Tuesday.

He said Shamim has a history of involvement in criminal activities, having been arrested three times previously, with multiple cases filed against him.

Shamim was arrested on Monday after an incident on the election day. Shamim was seen holding a pistol and firing it outside the Pahartali polling centre in Chittagong-10 on Sunday.

Two individuals, Shanto and Jamal, sustained serious injuries in the gunfire, leading to a case of attempted murder being filed against Shamim in Khulshi police station.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin said: "Shamim Azad, an identified extortionist, was working as a mercenary criminal, and our investigation aims to uncover the details of his affiliations and patrons. Initial information suggests he was working for an independent candidate with the Cauliflower symbol (Mohammad Manjur Alam) on the day of the elections. We are actively investigating this matter, and anyone found aiding or involved will face legal consequences."

The RAB official issued a warning, asserting that swift legal action would be taken against those who engaged in violence or attempted to disrupt the electoral environment. Shamim Azad is reported to be associated with Pahartali Ward No. 13 Councilor Wasim Uddin Chowdhury and has connections with Chhatra League politics.
