Five people were killed and two others injured in separate road accidents in Sylhet and Rangpur on Tuesday.

In Sylhet, three fish traders were killed and two injured as a pickup van carrying them and fish crashed into a roadside tree in Chhatak upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased were Abdul Karim, Nurul Haque and Asad Uddin, hailing from Jamalganj upazila in Sunamganj.

The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.

Police and locals said the pickup was going to Sylhet from the district’s Jamalganj upazila around 11am.

The pickup van hit a roadside tree after the driver lost control of the wheels in the Borokapon area, leaving the three dead on the spot and two critically injured, they said.

Joykalas highway police Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Kabir said a police team rushed to the spot and was working to recover the bodies.

The bodies will be handed over to the families upon completing legal procedures, he added.

In Rangpur, two bike riders were killed as a locally made four-wheeler ran over them in the Burirhat area of the Taragonj upazila.

The deceased were Bijoy, 20, and Taposh Chondro, 18, hailing from different areas of Rangpur.

Police said the vehicle, which was speeding, hit the motorcycle near the Burirhat area at around 10am, making the two fall from the bike and become seriously injured.

Locals rescued them and they were sent to hospital where the duty doctor declared them dead.

The four-wheeler and its driver, Millat, are now in police custody.
