A cargo ship carrying fly ash (raw materials for making cement) capsized in the Shibsa River near the Sundarbans.

The ship, which was carrying 12 staff, sank on Friday afternoon.

Fortunately, they all managed to swim ashore.

Md Mainul Hossain Mintu, vice-president of the Mongla branch of Bangladesh Lighterage Sramik Union, said the “MV Garohera” was carrying 1,422 metric tons of fly ash from India's Haldia port to Mongla, for a cement factory located in Ghorashal area.

On the way, when the ship reached the Nallian area of Shibsa River (Khulna) it got stuck in the char area and tilted to one side. Later, the floor burst, and the ship sank on the spot.

Due to the sinking of the cargo ship, the movement of vessels on the Bangladesh-India Inland Water Protocol route may be disrupted
