A compartment of a Dhaka-bound Rangpur Express train derailed on Tuesday, causing a halt to the rail link between Dhaka and the northern regions of Bangladesh.
The incident took place at Gharinda railway station at around 4:40am.
Rezaul Karim, in charge of Bangabandhu Setu East Railway Station, said that when the Rangpur Express train reached the railway station in Tangail, the cargo compartment close to the engine abruptly derailed from the tracks.
Rail service between the northern regions of Bangladesh and Dhaka is therefore cut off, he added.
Tangail Railway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar said that the matter was immediately reported to the railway authorities. A rescue team will reach the spot soon.
