Bhairab train collision claims 17 lives, dozens injured

  • Death toll may increase
  • Many trapped under train

At least 17 people were killed, and many others were injured when a container train and a passenger train collided in Kishoreganj's Bhairab upazila, on Monday afternoon.

Rasel, a firefighter at Bhairab Bazar Fire Station, confirmed the matter.

Two rear coaches of the Egarosindhur Express train were damaged. Witnesses reported that many people were trapped under the train, with several of the injured individuals lying beneath the damaged coaches.

Bhairab Station Master Yusuf said: “The incident took place around 3.30pm. The death toll is expected to rise further."

A total of 14 units of the fire service are conducing rescue operation, said Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence media chief Shahjahan Sikder. 

The government has deployed three platoons of BGB to assist the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, locomaster, assistant locomaster, and guard of the freight train involved in the Bhairab collision have been suspended.

Bangladesh railway (BR) Director General Quamrul Ahsan said that they have taken the steps following preliminary investigation.

Three separate committees have been formed to investigate the deadly train accident.

BR has formed two separate committees to investigate into the incident.

Dhaka Divisional office of Bangladesh Railway has formed a four-member committee to investigate the train accident.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow over the loss of lives in the train accident.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader also expressed profound shock and sorrow over the casualties in the train accident took place in Kishoreganj's Bhairab.
