Three people were seriously injured after a lift fell to the ground at a government housing project for officials and employees in Dhaka's Mirpur on Friday morning.

The injured were identified as former Prime Minister's Office employee Mostafizur Rahman, 62, Nais Ahmed, 40, and his eight-year-old son, Md Wasi.

The accident occurred around 6am at Building 1 of the project, west of the Paikpara Ansar Camp in Mirpur-1.

The injured were rescued and taken to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Agargaon.

Md Shahabuddin Ahmed, general secretary of the building and a personal officer at the Bangladesh Public Service Commission Secretariat, said the three residents of the fifth floor entered the lift after Fajr prayers.

Shortly afterwards, the lift reportedly broke loose and fell to the ground with a loud bang.

Hearing the noise, the building's security guard went to the scene and heard the injured people calling for help from inside the lift.

Several people from the surrounding area later helped rescue them and took them to hospital.

Mehedi Hasan, duty officer at Mirpur Model police station, said police had learned about the incident through several sources and sent officers to the scene.
