Seven members of the family of a real estate businessman associated with KJ Properties were injured in an attack in Lalmatia, Mohammadpur, in the early hours of Thursday.
The family has alleged that the attackers were members of a local teenage gang known as the "Munna Bahini." Two of the injured are in critical condition. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
The attack reportedly occurred around 2:30am. The family filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station on Friday.
Video footage circulating on social media shows several people assaulting a man wearing a red-and-black T-shirt in front of a white private car. At the same time, a woman attempts to shield him from the attackers.
The footage also captures a woman calling Mohammadpur Police Station, urging officers to respond immediately.
"Send force quickly. Don't delay. Will you only come after someone is killed?" she is heard saying.
The attackers fled after local residents intervened.
Police deny existence of 'Munna Bahini'
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Meshbah Uddin said police had found no evidence of any juvenile gang operating under the name "Munna Bahini."
According to the preliminary investigation, the incident began after a private car collided with a rickshaw near the family's residence, triggering an argument that escalated into a physical altercation.
"The family was leaving home late at night when their car struck a rickshaw near the gate. A prolonged altercation followed, leaving people from both sides injured. The investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken accordingly," the OC said.
Investigating officer Subrata Kumar Kundu said the violence stemmed from a minor dispute between two groups in the Lalmatia area.
He said police had spoken with the complainant's family, who claimed they did not know the attackers. The suspects have not yet been identified, and efforts to arrest them are underway.
Family alleges assault, robbery
The complainant, Farzana Kabir Shanta, alleged that her family's vehicle was blocked by a group of assailants while they were returning home from Old Dhaka.
She claimed the attackers assaulted family members, robbed them and vandalized their vehicle. She demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible, adding that two members of her family remain in critical condition.
According to the case statement, Farzana, her husband Abu Nayeem, their daughter Ayesha, her mother-in-law Josna Begum, and sisters-in-law Anika and Lubaba were returning to their Lalmatia home when their vehicle was allegedly surrounded by vans, motorcycles and another car near the Lalmatia Block A water tank area.
When Abu Nayeem got out to ask why their path had been blocked, he was allegedly attacked. After receiving Farzana's phone call, her brothers-in-law, Abdullah Al Nahid and Nazmul Hasan, arrived at the scene but were also assaulted.
The complaint alleges that the attackers used sharp weapons, looted gold jewellery and an expensive wristwatch, and damaged the family's vehicle, causing losses of more than Tk100,000.
The attackers reportedly fled after local residents rushed to the scene. The injured were taken to hospital, where Nahid and Nazmul remain in critical condition.
