Gazi Nizam Uddin, member secretary of Mirsarai upazila BNP, fled instead of attending his mother's funeral due to the fear of arrest.

His mother, Mahmuda Khanam, aged 73, passed away on Friday night after a prolonged illness.

The funeral was scheduled to take place at their home at 11:30am on Saturday.

Nizam Uddin arrived just 20 minutes before the funeral, but upon sensing the presence of plainclothes police officers from Zorargonj police station, he hurriedly left the premises to evade arrest.

BNP Convener of Mirsarai upazila Shahidul Islam Chowdhury said: "Gazi Nizam Uddin got trapped, trying to avoid arrest when plainclothes police officers stationed themselves at his mother's funeral. The government's police forces are hindering our leaders and activists from attending funerals."

Zorargonj police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Zahid Hossain said: "I was not informed about the BNP leader's mother's funeral until late at night. Currently, plainclothes police are on duty across the police station due to the Durga Puja festivities. Since he is accused of murder, fear might have driven him away. However, if he had attended the funeral, he could have been arrested, given the charges against him."

Gazi Nizam Uddin is accused in two separate cases of murder and involvement in a clash that resulted in the death of a teenager named Raihan Hossain Rumon during a confrontation between BNP and Awami League in Osmanpur union of Mirsarai upazila on September 29.
