Bangladesh Chhatra League has dissolved its committee at Chittagong University (CU).
The student wing of the ruling Awami League made the declaration in a press release on Sunday.
The decision comes amid accusations against CU-unit Chhatra League of assaulting a CU campus-based journalist over publishing a news.
The victim, identified as Musharraf Shah, is a correspondent of Prothom Alo and a member of the CU Journalists Association.
The incident took place in front of the Faculty of Arts building around 11:30am on Sunday.
Musharraf Shah alleged that the attackers were followers of CU-unit Chhatra League President Rezaul Haque Rubel and activists of the CFC group.
“I was going to the vice-chancellor's office around 11:30am. At that time, 15-20 Chhatra League activists stopped me in front of the Faculty of Arts building. They beat me with a stick and took away my mobile phone. Later, they took me to Rob Hall and beat me again.”
He added that during the beating, the Chhatra League men threatened him not to publish the report on the Chhatra League.
“Publish the news, then I will see who comes to save you. There will be no news about the Chhatra League,” they said, claims Shah.
After the incident, Musharraf was treated at the CU Medical Centre. Later, he was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital due to injuries on his chest and hand.
The chief medical officer of the University Medical Centre said Musharraf had gotten four stitches on his forehead. He also has injuries on his hands.
Meanwhile, Rezaul Haque Rubel, leader of a section of CFC Group and president of the CU-unit Chhatra League committee, said: “I have heard about this incident. I am looking for information. Action will be taken against those who are involved in this incident.”
Meanwhile, CU Proctor Dr Nurul Azim Sikder said: "I went to the university medical centre after the incident. He was sent to CMCH for treatment. Strict action will be taken against those involved in this incident.”
