A man allegedly hacked two children to dead after he failed to rape his sister-in-law in sadar upazila of Barguna early Friday.
The deceased are Hafizur, 13, son of Golam Khabir of Roadpara village under the Fuljhuri union, and Taifa, 3, the daughter of the rape-attempt survivor.
The woman was severely injured and has been admitted to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
Police arrested the accused Elias Pahloan, 30, son of Abu Pahloan, a resident of Purbo Keodabunia village of Barguna Sadar upazila and husband to the victim's elder sister.
Later, Elias Pahloan was produced before a Barguna court on Friday afternoon. He was later sent to jail.
The bodies of the children were sent to Barguna General Hospital for autopsies, said Additional Superintendent of Barguna Police (Sadar Circle) Abdul Halim.
According to the police, Elias had been harassing his divorced sister-in-law for a long time.
Last night, when the woman was sleeping with the two children, Elias entered the house around 3am and attempted to rape her.
As the two children woke up that time, he attacked them, leaving Hafizul dead on the spot and Taifa critically injured. Taifa succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital, said the police.
During primary interrogation, the accused admitted to his crimes.
