Awami League Rangpur ward committee dissolved 5 days before PM’s visit

  • AL leaders shocked by development
  • Metropolitan AL president made the decision
  • PM Hasina to visit Ranpur Aug 2
Update : 30 Jul 2023, 11:55 AM

The 18th ward committee of Rangpur Metropolitan Awami League was dissolved and a new convening committee was announced just five days before party president Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's scheduled visit to Rangpur.

Awami League Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Rangpur Divisional Organizing Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi expressed their astonishment when this matter came to light on Saturday.

The incident has sparked intense anger among leaders and activists of the metropolitan Awami League.

Several leaders of the ward Awami League revealed that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina is set to visit Rangpur on August 2.

On that day, at noon, she will address a divisional rally at the Rangpur Zilla School ground.

In preparation for her arrival, the leaders and activists are actively campaigning among the common people, including grassroots-level leaders and activists.

However, on Friday, in Munshipara Ward No 18 of Rangpur City Corporation, Metropolitan President Dr Delwar Hossain declared the ward committee dissolved and announced Sujat as the convener and Tito as the joint convener of the committee.

No one, including ward Awami League President Mirazul Islam Liton and General Secretary Jahangir Hossain Tuhin, had been informed about this decision.

Liton was shocked when he learned about the dissolution, considering the upcoming rally's importance.

Upon learning about the matter, Jahangir Hossain Tuhin, the general secretary of Awami League Ward No 18, stated that the ward committee was dissolved, and a new convening committee was announced without his knowledge.

Joint Convener Abul Kashem was not present in that meeting, and most of the metropolitan committee leaders were unaware of this decision.

Some leaders expressed concerns that those included in the new committee had no prior association with the Awami League, Chhatra League, or any allied party.

After the news of the ward committee's dissolution surfaced on Saturday afternoon, journalists asked Sujit Roy Nandi, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and other party leaders, who had come to discuss preparations for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's mass meeting in Rangpur on August 2, about this development.

They all expressed their surprise, stating that they had no prior knowledge of the committee's disbandment, and such a decision was not appropriate.
