Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday visited the Padma Bridge, with her sister Sheikh Rehana.
The premier and her sister drove around the bridge at 7:30am. They also walked another two kilometers from Pillars No 7 to 18, Press Secretary to the PM Ihsanul Karim told Dhaka Tribune.
The Padma Bridge authorities organized breakfast for the prime minister and other guests at Service Area-2 of the bridge at Shariatpur’s Zajira upazila.
The prime minister stayed there for about an hour and a half. She left for Ganabhaban around 10am, said Karim.
Approximately 95% of the bridge's construction is complete. The inauguration of the bridge is scheduled for June 30 next year, said Dewan Mohammad Abdul Kader, executive engineer of the bridge.
The project took off in December 2014 before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated work on the main bridge a year later.
In December 2020, the bridge came into full view with the installation of 41 spans in 42 piers stretching 150 metres.
The final slab was installed in August this year.
The project is supposed to be wrapped up by June next year as per the latest revised plan.
Regular transports will travel on the upper section of the two-storey bridge, while trains will take the lower route.
