An elderly woman has died in a fire that broke out at a slum near Bishwa Colony area under Akbar Shah Police Station of Chittagong.
The incident was reported around 6am on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Rezia Begum, 60, wife of Ibrahim.
Rezia and her 40-year-old daughter Khadiza got stuck in a room. Local people managed to pull Khadiza out but they failed to rescue her mother.
Firefighters recovered the charred body of the victim, and it was sent to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital, reports UNB.
“The victim was sleeping at the time of the fire. As she was ill, and could not get out of the house,” said Agrabad Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Farid Ahmed.
On information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot, managed to extinguish the flames around 7am.
An electrical short circuit caused the fire, the senior officer said.
Five shanties have been reportedly destroyed during the incident.
