Holidaymakers were seen roaming around in Bandarban on Friday after being unable to find accommodation as tourism came roaring back in the hill tract during the long weekend.
There are 55 hotels registered with the district hotel-motel owners’ association and none of them had a single vacant room when the last reports came in.
Moreover, taking the sudden surge in demand into account, jeep (colloquially called chander gari) owners were charging passengers double the usual fare.
Abdul Hakim, who went to Bandarban from Dhaka, said he had to pay Tk7,000 to travel a distance of just 40-50km. “Tourists will never come to Bandarban a second time if this continues,” he remarked.
The hotel owners, on the other hand, are rejoicing at the huge tourist turnout.
“There are no rooms available in any hotel in Sadar,” said Bandarban Hotel-Motel-Resort Owners’ Association President Amal Kanti Das.
Tourists have breathed life into Bandarban after a long time, he said.
Meanwhile, police are working on the ground to ensure safe travel for everyone.
Tourist police are on patrol to see to it that people can safely visit any tourist spots and return home afterwards, said Md Aminul Huq, in-charge of Bandarban Tourist Police.
