10 arrested over Durga Puja pavilion attack in Chittagong city

Update : 22 Oct 2021, 05:11 PM

Police in Chittagong said they have arrested 10 people, including nine members of former Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur-led Bangladesh Students' Rights Council, over their alleged involvements in the recent attack on the Durga Puja pavilion at the JM Sen Hall in the city.

The arrestees were identified as Md Nasir, Mizanur Rahman, Bayazid Bostami area Md Russell, office secretary Md Emon, Yar Mohammad, Zia Uddin, Yassin Arafat, Habibullah, Imran Hossain and Md Mizan.

They were arrested during raids conducted late on Thursday at different parts of the port city and Satkania, said Chittagong Kotwali police OC Nezam Uddin.

The arrests were made after the attackers were identified from the CCTV camera footage and photos of the incident, said the police officer.

The OC said the arrestees are leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Students' Rights Council, which is the political platform that spearheaded the quota reformation movement 2018 led by former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) vice-president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur.

Contacted, Nurul Haque Nur claimed the arrests were a conspiracy to tarnish his outfit’s image and demanded concrete proof against the accused.

Earlier, police filed a case under the Special Powers Act against 83 named and at least 500 unnamed accused over last Friday’s incident.

On October 15, after Jumma prayers at Anderkilla Shahi Jame Masjid, hundreds of Muslims brought out a procession protesting the recent incident involving the Holy Quran in Comilla.

They separated at one point — one group marched towards Jamal Khan area via Cheragi Pahar while the other group went towards JM Sen Hall before attacking and vandalizing the puja venue. They fled the scene soon after the attack.

Police later deployed a water cannon to bring the situation under control.
