The police arrested six leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in different places of Noakhali Sadar upazila on Friday night, ahead of a rally slated for Saturday.

The arrestees include Noakhali Chhatra Dal Vice President Anwar Hossain Rocky, and activists Md Noman, Alauddin Bhuiyan, PS Dulal, Sajib and Nur Uddin.

Noakhali BNP General Secretary Abdur Rahman expressed his concern saying: "A vested quarter, overly enthusiastic in view of our rally today, is conducting these activities. No one has the right to obstruct democratic meetings and rallies. We demand the unconditional release of our arrested leaders and workers."

Sudharam model police station Officer-in-Charge Anwarul Islam said that several cases are pending against the arrested BNP leaders, with arrests warrants out for a few.

“They will be sent to district jail through court on Saturday afternoon,” he added.

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is set to be present as chief guest at the rally scheduled for Saturday. The party's leaders and workers have already completed all the preparations to make the rally successful.
