Police on Sunday recovered a body of a footballer from the bathroom of the newly constructed dressing room of Barisal's Shahid Abdur Rab Serniabat Stadium.

The deceased has been identified as goalkeeper Sohail Jamaddar of Saif Sporting Club under-17 team in Dhaka. He was a resident of Jhalakathi district.

The body was recovered at 9am and was sent to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sohail's sister Shanta said that he came to the stadium on Saturday as he had a game.

She noted that no one, including Sohail's colleagues, was able to reach him on his mobile phone. Later, on Sunday morning she got to know that her brother's body was found.

Shanta also told journalists that Sohail was married but he recently got involved in an extramarital affair.

When she contacted his girlfriend, she said Sohail had sent her pictures of rope and a ladder and said he would commit suicide. Later he video called her and allegedly committed suicide.

Kotwali Model police station SI Shahidul Islam said initially it is believed that he committed suicide by hanging himself. “After being hung with a rope, the rope broke and he fell down, and hence the floor was bloody.”

He also said that they found pictures of the rope and the video call log from his phone.

The mobile phone has been seized as evidence.
