Cox's Bazar police desperate to find out reason behind killings

Update : 29 Apr 2023, 01:40 PM

Members of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are carrying out an investigation into the recovery of decomposed bodies of 10 people from a trawler off Nazirertek beach in Cox's Bazar to find the person or persons responsible.

Cox's Bazar police are desperate to find out the reason behind the murder.

At the beginning of the investigation, the issues of domination over fishing in the sea, drug trafficking, and conflict between fishermen and robbers are being looked into.

According to the police, two of the victims were accused in cases filed at Maheshkhali police station.

The deceased Nurul Kabir was accused in arms and robbery cases and Shamsu Majhi in drug and murder cases.

There is also a lack of information about others who died.

Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police Md Mahfuzul Islam said: "The incident is very shocking. There are laws to judge who is guilty and who is innocent. No one has the power to take the law into their own hands. The PBI and CID have been investigating the incident. The matter will be cleared upon receiving the investigation report.”

The SP also said according to the autopsy report, no gunshot wounds or other injuries were found on the body of any of the victims. As a result, it is very clear that their hands and feet were tied and locked in the freezer.

Following a court order, Baitta Kamal, the owner of the trawler of the Matarbari area and also accused number one and trawler operator Karim Shikder, accused number four, are on remand. The information received from them is being verified. The investigation is going on based on the sources.

Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Md Rafiqul Islam said: "The incident of recovering the bodies of 10 people is touching. For this reason, the police are seriously investigating.”

Meanwhile, since the recovery of the bodies, many mysteries have arisen in the area.

Questions have arisen about why some of the deceased went to the sea even though they were not fishermen.

Shamshu and Osman Gani

Samshul Alam alias Samshu Majhi, the owner of the trawler and one of the victims, is the son of deceased Rafiq Uddin of Chankhola Para of Hariarchhara area of Hoanak Union of Maheshkhali Upazila. He has two brothers and four sisters. He also has a wife, Rokeya, who is the plaintiff in the case, and a daughter and two sons in the family. Although he is a fisherman by profession, he was an irregular fisherman.

But, the locals as well as the administration are looking for an answer to the question of why they went fishing in the sea that day.

Osman Gani was one of the 10 people found dead on the trawler.

After the dead body of Osman Gani was at Cox's Bazar District Hospital Morgue, his father Musa Ali did not go to receive the dead body out of shame.

Musa Ali commented: "The people of the area are saying that my son was a bandit, so they killed my son, they killed him while committing a robbery. After hearing these words from people, I did not go to the administration to bring back my son's body. So I sent his mother. The dead body was later buried in Mithachari Bara Graveyard, Ward No 3, Shaplapur Union, Maheshkhali upazila.”

According to Musa Ali, Osman Gani had never been to the sea before. “The boy had no experience with the sea; although the boy was still 14-15 years old, his body shape and structure were very big.” Local Nurul Kabir took his son to the sea alluring him. That is why the son had to die as a bandit.

On Sunday, the decomposed bodies of 10 were discovered on a trawler floating off Nazirertek Beach in Cox's Bazar.

According to local fishermen, a few days ago, a group of robbers attacked the trawler, looting and killing the fishermen onboard before placing them inside the trawler's deck and making a hole in it.

Rokeya Begum, the wife of trawler owner Shamsul Alam, filed a case, accusing four people and 50-60 unidentified persons on Tuesday.

Two of the accused, Kamal Prakash Baitta and Karim Shikdar, were arrested on Tuesday and were placed on a five-day remand each.
