Police recovered the body of a female doctor from a room at Aziz Super Market in the Shahbagh area of the capital.
The deceased was identified as Farah Ferdous, 32.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday morning, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said the room where the doctor was found had been locked from the outside.
He said the body had begun to decompose. Neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the room on Friday afternoon and informed the police. Officers later broke open the door and recovered the body.
Dr Mohammad Asif Imran, a physician at the Department of Nephrology of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, told Dhaka Tribune that Farah had been two academic batches junior to him at Sir Salimullah Medical College. He described her as an exceptionally talented doctor and said she was about six months away from completing her training in cardiothoracic surgery.
He said Farah had qualified for the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) at a young age.
According to him, Farah was unmarried and lived alone. He said she had reportedly been experiencing family-related difficulties and depression.
He added that the cause of death could not be confirmed until an autopsy is completed.
Farah's younger sister, Nazula Ferdous, who is also a doctor and is currently studying neurosurgery at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), said she did not live with her sister.
She said she learned of the incident from local residents and went to Shahbagh Police Station. Police accompanied her to the room and called out to Farah, but received no response. They then broke open the door and found her seated on a bed with her head resting on a table. Nazula identified the body.
