Four fishermen were killed and another remains missing after a fishing trawler capsized in the Bay of Bengal off Kutubdia in Cox's Bazar amid rough weather early Monday.
The incident occurred at around 4:30am while the trawler was fishing at sea. Seven other fishermen on board were rescued alive.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Nafiz, 20, son of Shamsul Alam; Md Karim, 21, son of Abul Kashem; Ayub Monir, 20, son of Abdul Mabud, all from South Amjakhali in Kutubdia upazila; and Kamal, 48, of Haidarpara in Ali Akbar Deil.
Nasir Uddin, 21, of Kagpara village in Magnama union under Pekua upazila, remains missing.
Abul Kalam, president of the Kutubdia Fisheries Federation, said the fishing trawler FB Fakira Masjid, owned by Nurul Absar of South Amjakhali in Baraghop union, had gone to sea with 12 fishermen. The fishing vessel capsized at dawn after encountering rough weather.
Seven fishermen were rescued soon after the incident. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of four fishermen, while the search for the missing fisherman was continuing at the time of filing this report.
Faruk Ahmed, investigation officer of Kutubdia Police Station, confirmed that four bodies had been recovered and one fisherman remained missing following the trawler capsize.
