A headmaster of a school in Barguna has been temporarily suspended after he raped a female student.
Abdul Jabbar Khan, the headmaster of Anwar Hossain Secondary School in Barguna's Patharghata upazila raped the SSC candidate allegedly by promising her of marriage.
Patharghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sufal Chandra Goldar said the rape survivor had presented several pieces of evidence to him on Tuesday.
However, as the rape survivor is not of legal age, her evidence was not recorded, he added.
The UNO further added that on March 19, the headmaster and the student went to him and asked for permission to get married. “I did not give them permission as the girl is underage.”
The officer also said the matter has been reported to the Barguna district administration and the school's committee has been asked to take action.
Anwar Hossain Akan, mayor of Patharghata Municipality and president of the school management committee, said the rape survivor had made a written complaint to him on April 23.
The school committee held an emergency meeting on Wednesday and decided to temporarily suspend the headmaster.
The girl's father said the headmaster of the school tricked his daughter into a relationship and raped her by promising marriage.
He added that his daughter told him about the matter after being sick one day after a trip.
“Later, I filed a petition with the school management committee after telling them about the rape,” he told.
Meanwhile, the accused teacher planned to settle the matter by paying Tk5 to the family.
When Dhaka Tribune tried to contact the headmaster, the call was received by an assistant teacher named Alamin Forkan.
He said Abdul Jabbar Khan was ashamed of what he did.
