Despite providing staff training of food management and quality control, the popular hotel has been serving unhygienic and spoiled food

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection of Bogra and Food Safety Authority in a joint drive imposed a Tk3 lakh fine on the renowned and traditional Akboria Grand Hotel in Bogra on Wednesday afternoon for serving food in an unhygienic, stale and unhealthy environment.

They alleged that despite providing staff training on food management and quality control, the popular hotel has been serving unhygienic and spoiled food.

Confirming the information, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection of Bogra Assistant Director Iftekharul Islam Rizvi said the hotel might be sealed if similar complaints are received in the future.

“In response to various complaints from consumers, we conducted a raid at the historic Akboria Grand Hotel on Kazi Nazrul Islam Road in Bogra city and fined the hotel management a total of Tk3 lakh for selling stale sweets and having improper freezing facilities and unsanitary food storage under the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009,” he said.

The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority has provided some guidelines for improving hotel management, he added.

According to the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, nearly 500 employees work at the Akboria Grand Hotel and they received training on safe food management in January this year.

However, the food quality at this popular hotel did not improve.

Ramzan Ali, head of sales at Akboria Grand Hotel, said that its Chairman Hasan Ali Alal has been making various efforts to control the hotel's food quality.

“We also receive complaints from customers and try to resolve the problem as fast as possible. However, mistakes happened due to lack of monitoring as there are many employees,” he added.
