Sukhda River erosion threatens to erase Bogra village

Villagers fear losing their livelihoods, homes and agricultural land without immediate protection

Update : 21 Oct 2026, 08:50 PM

Continuous erosion by the Sukhda River has put Charpara Majhipara village in Bogra’s Sonatala upazila at risk of disappearing, as the river gradually devours homesteads and farmland.

Fearing the loss of their homes and livelihoods, residents have formed a human chain demanding urgent measures to protect the village from further erosion.

Locals said immediate intervention was needed during the dry season to save their ancestral homes, agricultural land and the settlement they had built over generations. Without prompt action, they warned, the entire village could eventually disappear into the river.

For residents of Charpara Majhipara, river erosion has become a constant source of anxiety, threatening not only their land but also their security and livelihoods.

Speaking at the human chain, villagers said the river was once nearly half a kilometre away from their homes. It has now reached their doorsteps, leaving them fearing that their houses and farmland could be swallowed by the river at any time.

Those who spoke at the programme included Birendra Nath Sarkar Biren, Sanjib Pramanik, Dhiren Sarkar, Shasthi Pramanik, Ujjal Pramanik, Rabin Mandal, Gopal, Subas, Anil and Swapna Rani.

The residents urged the authorities to take immediate and effective steps to curb the erosion during the dry season, warning that further delay could wipe their village off the map.

They also sought the intervention of local lawmaker Kazi Rafiqul Islam to protect their homes and farmland.

Golam Rabbani, chairman of the local Jorgachha Union Parishad, said the village had been suffering from continuous erosion by the Sukhda River for around 20–25 years and was now on the verge of losing its existence.
