Rescue operations for the accident-stricken Sonar Bangla Express train and a freight train at Hasanpur Railway Station in Comilla, have not been completed even after 15 hours.
Authorities said on Monday that the rescue work would be completed soon, but they could not provide a specific timeframe.
Recovery operations are underway with the assistance of two relief trains arriving from Laksam and Brahmanbaria's Akhaura.
Nangalkot Railway Station Master Jamal Uddin said since the main lines were not affected, train communication in both directions resumed normally Sunday night.
He said that on Sunday evening, around 6pm, the freight train on line number four at Hasanpur Railway Station was struck from behind by the Sonar Bangla Express train, which was traveling at 77 kilometres per hour toward Dhaka.
The collision caused six carriages of the train to derail. A total of seven carriages from both trains were derailed, injuring 35 people, including four critically, he added.
Nangalkot Upazila Health Officer Devdas Deb said that upon hearing the news of the accident, medical teams from Nangalkot, Chauddagram and Sadar South upazilas arrived at the scene with ambulances.
Of the injured, 14 were treated at Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex, one at Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex and several others at local diagnostic centers in Hasanpur Bazaar, he added.
