A CNG driver arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a Class 7 student in Lalmai, Comilla, was taken to court on Saturday at 3:30pm to record his confessional statement under Section 164.

The accused, identified as Sumon, 35, was produced before Judge Muminul Hoque at Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Court No 6.

Comilla Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Pankaj Barua said the preliminary police investigation had found information indicating Sumon's sole involvement in the incident.

According to police, Sumon picked up the girl in a CNG from the Paduar Bazar Biswa Road area on Wednesday night, promising to take her home for a fare of Tk300. Police allege that he later took her to a cropland in Lalmai, where he raped and murdered her.

After the murder, Sumon fled to Chittagong with the girl's mobile phone. He was arrested on Friday.

Based on information provided by Sumon, police later recovered the phone from a wooded area in Bakhrabad.

The girl's body was recovered on Thursday morning from a cropland in Jagatpur village under Perul North Union in Lalmai.

She was an irregular Class 7 student at Farida Bidyayatan High School in Comilla city. Her home district was Jeshore, and she lived with her family in the city's Racecourse area.
