A case has been filed with Babuganj police station of Barisal against three policemen for torturing three women in custody.
Mahabubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station, on Tuesday afternoon said the case was filed early Sunday.
The three accused policemen – Sub-Inspector (SI) Khalilur Rahman, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Nasir Uddin and Constable Neepa Rani of Babuganj police station were withdrawn from the police station and attached to the Barisal district Police Lines.
Farhad Sardar, assistant superintendent of police Babuganj-Wazirpur circle and investigating officer of the case, said they would be arrested if found guilty.
As per case statement, on March 3, a family picnic was organized at Mahinur Begum's house adjacent to Ishwar Narayan Secondary School in Dakshin Dehergati village of Babuganj upazila where loud music was played.
Local Awami League leader Kazi Delwar Hossain reported the matter to police alleging sound pollution and disturbing peaceful sleep.
After receiving the news, a team from Babuganj police station went to the spot and requested them to stop playing loud music.
At that time, the police engaged in altercation with the local youths and women.
At one point the three accused policemen assaulted Akashi Begum, 35, wife of Hemayet Molla who organized the picnic, Rashida Begum, 45, wife of Habibur Rahman Rahim and her daughter Mala Begum, 25, Kabir Hossain Molla's son Maruf Hossain, 14, Nasir Howlader's son Hasib, 15, and Sabbir, 14, of Changuria area in Wazirpur.
Police detained and brought them to the police station and again beat them in the custody. ASI Nasir Uddin filed a case against 16 people, including the detained six, accusing them of obstructing public duties and injuring law enforcers with intentions to kill them.
The arrested were sent to jail after being produced before Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman.
On March 12, during the hearing of bail prayer Akashi Begum, Rashida and Mala Begum, three of the accused, showing injury signs before the court, alleged that they were beaten after being taken into police custody.
In view of this, Nurul Amin, judge of Barisal Judicial Magistrate Court-3, ordered to register a case against the accused law enforcers for torturing three women under custody.
