Tangail man dies in police custody

The wife of the deceased says her husband killed himself as he was unable to bear the torture unleashed on him by policemen

A man who had been detained on Monday allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the toilet of Banshtail police outpost in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail district early on Tuesday.

The deceased is Lebu Shikdar, 50, of Banshtail village.

Gias Uddin, in-charge (investigation) of Banshtail police outpost, said the police on Monday detained Lebu and one Mafiz in connection with the killing of their Sakhina Begum of Banshtail Westpara village.

“Lebu killed himself by hanging himself from the ceiling of the toilet of the police outpost,” said Gias.

The police handed over the body to the family members after postmortem and he was buried at night.

Protesting the murder, local people blocked the Gorai-Sakhipur-Dhaka road after torching tyres on the road and disrupting vehicular movement for three hours on Tuesday.

According to Aleya Begum, the wife of Lebu, a team of policemen led by officers Sakhawat and Nesar Uddin picked up Lebu and took him to the police outpost on Monday night and they unleashed torture on Lebu during the whole night. He died there after failing to bear the torture in police custody.

It has been alleged that the officers are trying to pass on the case as a suicide.

Aleya Begum also demanded justice and exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing.

Mirzapur Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Aminul Islam Bulbul said Lebu was found hanging from the rod in the toilet ventilator on a thick wire.

Mohammad Kaisar, superintendent of Tangail Police, said a police constable identified as Subrata Sarkar has been withdrawn for dereliction of duty. He was attached to the district police lines.

A three-member probe body was also formed to look into the matter headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Mir Monir Hossain, he said adding: “Legal action will be taken against any policemen involved in the death of Lebu.”
