One person died while another was injured while allegedly smuggling cattle from Myanmar.

Police recovered the body of the deceased on Saturday morning and sent it to Bandarban Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

The deceased has been identified as Misbah Uddin, son of Mohiuddin of Nayapara union while Gias Uddin, son of late Zaker Ahammad from the same union was injured.

Badi Alam, who worked with the deceased Misbah Uddin, said 10 of them were hired to take the cattle, which were smuggled from Myanmar to Naikhongchhari. Four cows fell into a ditch on the road.

While trying to rescue them from the ditch, Misbah Uddin and Gias Uddin were injured when a tree fell on them, he said.

Later, injured Misbah Uddin died in the boat, he added.

The deceased's father, Mohiuddin, said Misbah Uddin was murdered. “If a tree falls, one side of his body would have been bruised but my son had wounds all over his body,” he said.

Nayapara Union Parishad Chairman Md Kafil Uddin said: “Seeing the injury mark on Misbah's body, I think he was hacked. The autopsy will clarify whether it was murder or an accident.”

Smugglers have been illegally smuggling hundreds of cattle through the Myanmar border at Alikadam for the past year and a half.
