Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Friday gave compensation to the victims of wild elephant attack in Rangamati.
“The hilly areas have a vast biodiversity but as people are cutting trees and destroying forests, elephants are migrating to the locality due to a lack of food,” he said while handing out cheques to the victims in Kaptai upazila's Proshanti Park.
He handed over cheques worth Tk865,000 to 31 victims of the wild elephant attacks.
“If the wild elephants are provided with enough food, they will not come to the locality,” the minister said.

On Friday morning, the minister inaugurated the foundation stone for the construction of a six-storey office building for the divisional forest officers.

Chittagong region Bipul Krishna Das, Forest Conservator of Rangamati region
Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, divisional forest officials of Rangamati region and
local district administration officials, among others, attended the ceremony.
