The Appellate Division on Monday handed over the final Tk15 lakh compensation cheque to Nahid, who lost her right hand while working at a workshop in Brahmanbaria's Ashuganj at the age of 10.
With the latest payment, Nahid, now 16, has received the full Tk30 lakh compensation ordered by the court from workshop owner Haji Yakub.
Barrister Omar Faruk represented Nahid during the hearing.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Faruk said the six-year legal battle had finally come to an end.
"Today's payment completes the Tk30 lakh compensation awarded to Nahid. She had previously received the first Tk15 lakh in two instalments," he said.
He added that Nahid would also receive a monthly allowance of Tk7,000 for her ongoing expenses.
Earlier, on March 10, the Appellate Division summoned workshop owner Haji Yakub after he failed to comply with the court's order to pay the compensation. The order came after hearing a contempt petition filed by Senior Advocate Md Ashfaqul Islam.
On November 19, 2024, the Appellate Division upheld a High Court order directing Yakub to pay Nahid Tk30 lakh in compensation.
Earlier, on January 12, 2024, the High Court ordered the workshop owner to deposit Tk30 lakh in Nahid's name. The court also directed that she receive Tk7,000 per month until reaching adulthood.
The case stemmed from a report titled The Tragic Consequences of Child Labour in Bhairab, published on November 1, 2020.
According to the report, Nahid, then a Class IV student from Araisidha in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, was sent to work at a workshop in Bhairab after her father, a shoe trader, lost his livelihood during the Covid-19 pandemic.
While operating machinery at the workshop, her right hand became trapped and had to be amputated above the elbow.
Following publication of the report, Nahid's father filed a writ petition in the High Court in December 2020 seeking compensation.
