A capped langur was allegedly beaten to death by villagers in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali.
The incident took place on Friday evening in North Amkhola village of the upazila.
Nayan Mistry, range officer of Patuakhali Forest Division, said locals informed them about the sighting of the langur.
Local forest officials visited the spot on Friday morning and advised the locals not to harm the animal, Nayan Mistry said.
“However, when the officials left, some locals beat the langur to death in the evening and buried it at night,” he said.
“Later, we recovered the body on Friday night,” he added.
Meanwhile, the locals said they attacked the langur as it tried to enter a house and hurt a baby.
Ahsanullah Hasan Musa, a member of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, expressed his anger over the incident.
“The langur did not harm any human and it was very quiet. Still, the villagers attacked and killed it,” he said.
Baizid Munshi, another member of the organization, said more such incidents will happen in the future if exemplary punishment is not given to those involved in this incident.
Galachipa police station Officer-in-Charge Shonit Kumar Gayen said actions will be taken against those involved in the incident as per the order of higher officials.
