A case has been filed against three people at a Bhola court over the beating and the hacking of a pet dog in Char Fesson upazila allegedly centering previous enmity with its owner. The dog was severely injured in the incident, according to the case.
Taking it into cognizance, the court ordered the Dakshin Aicha police to investigate the case, said the police station's Officer-in-Charge Md Sakhawat Hossain on Wednesday.
The pet owner, Sabura Khatun of ward No nine under the upazila's Char Manika Union Parishad, sued Razzak Kazi, Yunus Kazi and Nurul Islam Kazi at the court of Char Fesson Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate on Monday.
“The court ordered us to submit a probe report in this regard,” the OC said.
According to the case, the trio beat the dog with iron rods and hacked it with sharp weapons on May 27. Left to bleed, the dog with serious wounds is now being treated locally.
The Parliament in July 2019 passed the Animal Welfare Bill 2019, with significantly stricter penalties for cruelty to animals compared to the previous colonial-era Cruelty to Animal Act of 1920.
Severing any organ of an animal or killing any animal by poisoning it will be considered an offence and the punishment for this will be a maximum of two years imprisonment, or a Tk50,000 fine, or both.
