Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have destroyed 30 acres of poppy field in a remote area of Thanchi upazila in Bandarban.
A raid was conducted in the Tindu Union of Thanchi Upazila.
Led by 38-BGB Bolipara Battalion Commander Lt Col Khandkar Muhammad Sharif-ul-Alam, PSC, Camp Commander of Tendumukh BGB Camp, Naib Subedar Md Inyamul Haque, the BGB soldiers raided in the 30 acres of land in Kaika Khumi Para area of Tindu Union in Ward no 2, according to BGB sources.
Sensing the presence of BGB members, the poppy cultivators ran away.
Later the field was destroyed in the presence of local people. The estimated market value of the cultivated poppy is Tk11.25 crore.
BGB also said that intelligence surveillance has been increased to see if there are more poppy fields in the area, and more operations will be conducted to stop the prohibited poppy cultivation in the future.
The BGB destroyed another 12 acre poppy field by raiding the same area in two phases on January 24 and February 2.
