Authorities at Chuadanga warehouse found 28 bags of sand and one bag of stones among government wheat sacks imported from Russia.

The wheat sacks reached Chuadanga via Khulna on Sunday.

The wheat was sent through three contractors.

Khulna Food Department said some bags might have been swapped on the road.

A committee has been formed in Chuadanga to investigate the matter.

Moshiur Rahman of the Khulna Food Department said: “There is no chance of such irregularities from the ghat. The sacks might have been switched on the road. The truth will be revealed after investigation.”

Some 100 metric tons of wheat were sent to the Chuadanga district food warehouse in six trucks on Sunday from ghat no 4 in Khulna. Among them, 28 bags of sand and one bag of stones were found.

At that time, 13 bags of sand were found in two trucks of Jonaki Paribahan, nine bags of sand were found in two trucks of Sarker Enterprise and six bags of sand and one bag containing six large pieces of stone were found in two trucks of Sunrise Jute Traders Ltd.

Nannu and Asad, truck drivers of Jonaki Paribahan, said they brought the sand and stones but not to give less wheat but sometimes those were needed when vehicles were unable to move. Sometimes they carried the sand and stone for measuring weights as well.

Chuadanga District Food Controller AKM Shahidul Haque said that on Sunday, the wheat was weighed and unloaded from the truck. At this time, 28 bags of sand and one bag of stones were found.

He complained that the truck drivers keep sandbags and pieces of stone to keep the weight of wheat sacks equal.

Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga Food Warehouse, said: "A three-member investigation committee headed by Alamdanga upazila Food Control Officer Abdul Hamid has been formed to investigate the real cause of the incident. The committee has been asked to submit the inquiry report within one working day. After that, the necessary measures will be taken.”

Khulna Divisional Food Officer Abdus Salam said that he has not yet received this matter in written form. Once they get it in writing, they can take necessary steps subject to investigation.
