Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Friday inaugurated Brac's boat school for play-based and experiential learning of children.
The opening ceremony organized by Brac was held at the bank of Dakatia river in Chandpur sadar on Friday.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni was present here as the chief guest.
Also, Brac head office and field level staff including Brac Education, Skill Development and Migration Program Director Safi Rahman Khan, Education Activities Program Head Prafulla Chandra Barman were present in the event.
Dhaka TribuneAt that time, the education minister said: "Science and mathematics are very interesting subjects; they can be learned with great pleasure if you teach it in a fun way, if you don't do it, even the simplest subjects can become difficult."
“Brac, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, has transformed many boats into boat schools, using very accessible materials, through pictures, animations, and play, to bring out everything from science to mathematics. At the same time, we should teach our students the issue of humanity, the issue of values from an early age."
"That is the essence of our new curriculum. How to learn by doing, happily, without memorizing… We will not be afraid of tests. And be human with values. I believe that this effort of our government's new curriculum and this effort of Brac, will complement each other and one will help others to go ahead”.
Dhaka TribuneThe Values Boat was inspired by the philosophy of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC, who ensured that along with regular academic subjects, value education and performing fine arts are incorporated in BRAC schools.
BRAC had introduced the boat schools in the wetlands (haor regions) of north-eastern Bangladesh in 2011.
The idea was to bring the classroom to the children who were deprived from accessing education living in the haors.
The Boat School project was selected as “100 Global Inspiring Innovations of 2017” list by HundrED, a Finnish global education non-profit organization.
