Update : 22 Dec 2022, 12:41 PM

Nine teachers and staff including the former vice chancellor of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) have received death threats over a letter.

The letter along with two pieces of white shroud cloth was sent by post on Wednesday under the name of “Sacheton Nagorik Samaj”.

Acting registrar Salim Hossain filed a general diary (GD) at Motihar police station in this regard on behalf of the aggrieved teachers.

The teachers and officials in whose names the letter have been sent are former vice-chancellor Md Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, acting registrar Md Salim Hossain, Director (Research and Extension) Md Farooq Hossain, Director (Student Welfare) Md Rabiul Awal, Deputy Director (Student Welfare) Md Mamunur Rashid , Director (Planning and Development) Jaglul Sadat, Controller Nazim Uddin Ahmed, engineer Md Harun Or Rashid and engineer Md Raisul Islam.

The teachers primarily assumed that the threat may be related to an unpleasant and unwanted incident that happened earlier with the inspection committee formed to implement the university's reform strategy.

The president of the teachers' association Md Farooq Hossain said that the inspection committee was formed to implement the university's reform strategy as per the government directives. Some teachers are always against the committee. After the implementation of this committee, some unwanted incidents happened with the teachers.

He said that there may be a link between this incident and the unpleasant incident that happened some days ago.

The GD mentioned that panic has spread among the teachers and officials. They demanded an investigation into the incident.

Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said that they have received the complaint and it has been recorded as a general diary.

Action will be taken through investigation, he said.
