Comilla liberation day is being celebrated on Thursday as the district was freed from the clutches of the Pakistani occupation forces on December 8, 1971.

To mark the day, the district administration has chalked out a set of programs, including placing floral wreaths on the graves of martyrs, discussions and cultural programs.

A procession will parade through the main thoroughfares of the city.

Comilla district was under Sector No 2 during the Liberation War.

Major Khaled Mosharraf and Major ATM Haider commanded the sector, headquartered at Melaghar.

In the run-up to the freedom of the district, there were several battles between the liberation forces and the Pakistani occupation army.

Safiul Alam, a former commander of Comilla district Muktijoddha Sangsad, recalled the events leading to the attainment of freedom. According to him, the battle at Comilla airport was a remarkable event. On the night of December 7, a fierce fight erupted between the Freedom Fighters and the Pakistani forces. The Pakistanis soon started fleeing the area as the FFs took control of their main base at the airport.

The FFs, on the following day, declared Comilla district liberated when the district's first administrator, advocate Ahmed Ali, hoisted the national flag of independent Bangladesh at the Town Hall ground.

Badrul Huda, former president of Bangladesh Socheton Nagorik Committee, also recalled the stirring times. He said that the day brought glory for Comilla. “It is a day of great pride,” he said.
