Police have claimed to have largely unravelled the mystery surrounding the murder of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, the only son of Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Comilla University.
The district police are scheduled to disclose further details at a press conference at noon on Sunday.
A district police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the investigation had made significant progress and the mystery surrounding the killing had largely been resolved.
According to officials involved in the investigation, preliminary evidence suggests Opratim may have been murdered over his iPhone.
District police media officer and Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfor Rahman said: “We will present the full details of the incident at the press conference at noon on Sunday. We request everyone to wait until then.”
Opratim went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his rented home in Gandhamati, Kotbari, saying he was going to take photos with friends. He was a seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School.
His body was recovered on Saturday afternoon from a secluded wooded area in Lalmai Hills in Sananda village under Bijoypur union of Sadar Dakshin upazila. Police said there were signs of injury to his head.
Following his disappearance, university authorities and law enforcement agencies reviewed CCTV footage from the area. One recording showed Opratim with another teenager near the university’s main gate.
Police detained the teenager and, based on information obtained during interrogation, raided his home and recovered the phone on Saturday night, officials said.
Another teenager was detained on Saturday in connection with the incident and is being interrogated, law enforcement officials said.
