A man has allegedly hacked his mother and sister-in-law to death and killed his eight-month-old niece by slamming her against the ground in Debidwar, Comilla.
The incident occurred around 8:30am on Monday, at the house of late Mostafa Master in the southern part of Barshalghar village in the upazila.
Following the incident, local residents caught the accused, Imon, 24, red-handed and locked him inside a room. He is the son of the late Farid Mia of the same house.
According to locals, Imon’s mother, Peyaara Begum, and his eight-month-old niece died at the scene. His sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, who sustained critical injuries in the attack, died on the way to hospital.
Local sources said Imon suddenly became agitated around 8:30am and hacked his mother to death with a machete. He then slammed his eight-month-old niece against the ground, killing her. When Rabeya Begum came forward to stop him, he attacked her indiscriminately with the machete, leaving her critically injured.
Locals later rescued Rabeya and rushed her to hospital for treatment, while detaining Imon in a nearby room.
Debidwar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the incident, saying police were on their way to the scene after receiving the report.
“Preliminarily, we have learned that Imon had been ill for a long time. However, it is not yet clear what prompted the brutal killings. The matter will become clear after we reach the scene and conduct a detailed investigation,” he said.
