Hundreds of thousands of ruling party activists and general people are eagerly waiting to get directives from Awami League President Sheikh Hasina as the premier will deliver a speech in the historic Polo Ground of Chittagong on Sunday afternoon.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at the venue after 3pm and is slated to deliver a special message at the rally.
Such campaigns by party leaders have increased enthusiasm among the grassroots activists of the port city.
Though the Awami League president was expected to join the rally at 3pm, people from each and every corner of this large district started to join the venue at 7am by holding festoons and placards and shouting slogans, praising Sheikh Hasina's leadership.
While visiting the Polo Ground and the nearby areas, this correspondent observed after 12pm, the venue was filled with enthusiastic people.
When asked what kind of message they were expecting from the premier, one of the supporters said: “Of course, it will be a message about the upcoming 12th national polls. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has done a lot for Chittagong. Many big projects are being implemented. Chittagong residents are happy because of these reasons.”
They also said that Chittagong Awami League wants to pass the next polls in a united way.
“We want to win in every constituency to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina as a gift in the upcoming election,” they noted.
The rally arranged by Chittagong city and north-south district units Awami League jointly started around 1pm.
Local leaders of Chittagong and central leaders of the Awami League are giving speeches now.
Apart from the port city, leaders and activists from 15 upazilas were also coming to the grand rally using various means of transport like buses, trucks, and microbuses.
Prime Minister Hasina last addressed an Awami League rally in the port city on March 28, 2012, at the same venue.
At the rally, the prime minister will inaugurate 30 projects and lay the foundation stones for four others in Chittagong.
